Data Analyst

Role overview

Data analysts generally report to a Data Team Manager, a Big Data Manager, an IT Data Director or a Chief Data Officer. They may aspire to these positions during their career. Both technical and digital, this job involves a wide range of activities, from the creation of dashboards to in-depth statistical studies.

The Data Analyst's job is to exploit, interpret and add value to a company's data in order to create value. They also produce useful observations from their analysis reports to help decision-making. Data Analysts use massive amounts of data (Big Data) to create various dashboards and statistical models to provide insight to operational departments.

Main Responsibilities

Data Analysts have a global vision of the company, from marketing to sales, and must have a multitude of skills in order to carry out their missions successfully.

The data analyst extracts the data required for his/her analysis work from a website, an API, etc. They define the management rules for cleaning up databases, such as formatting and deleting duplicates. They set the management rules for structuring the company's databases. This professional writes the specifications for automating the management rules for the project owner or the IT department. They also ensure data quality throughout processing. They analyse data, highlighting correlations and identifying outliers.

The Data Analyst creates dashboards and industrialised reporting tools. They carry out statistical tests on the data, set up statistical models and determine the key variables to be included. The data manager takes part in workshops to identify the needs of internal and external customers and translates business issues into analytical terms. He then communicates the results of his analyses and the appropriate solutions with the business teams using data visualisation tools.

The Data Analyst also presents these two elements to Management and suggests ways of taking advantage of them. Data Analysts constantly monitor new technologies and the latest data analysis software. They research and experiment with new modelling and data analysis methods. They also select new data analysis tools and techniques for use within the company.

Competencies

 

  • Mastery of technical tools and software: Data Analysts must master essential tools such as Web Analytics, Excel, BI, Tableau, QlikView, PowerBI, VBA, SAS, etc.
  • Mastery of programming languages: they must also be proficient in Python, R, Java, Scala, Julia, C++, etc.
  • Expertise in database management: they must have expertise in database management such as SQL, NoSQL, etc.
  • Proficiency in statistical tests and methods: segmentation, random forest, regression, etc. Proficiency in operating systems: Windows, Unix, etc.
  • Fluent English: this is a real asset for this position, as the software and tools used in data analysis are generally in English.
