Field Service Engineer

Role overview

Reporting to the Technical Director and the Plant Manager, a Field Service Engineer works in industry (electronics, aeronautics, etc.). Their role is to ensure that the machines used in factories are working properly. Thanks to their mastery of software and IT tools, they carry out in-depth monitoring of maintenance processes. The technician's main objective is to minimise equipment breakdowns. They are therefore committed to implementing preventive and corrective maintenance strategies on the production site.

Industrial maintenance engineers generally work on permanent contracts in industrial production companies or manufacturing plants. This job requires a permanent presence on site. Working hours depend on the technical problems encountered. A Field Service Engineer's job involves a great deal of travel. In some cases, this maintenance technician may go abroad to work internationally. This profession is constantly evolving. A number of companies have vacancies for this position.

Main Responsibilities

A Field Service Engineer is responsible for calibrating and installing equipment and ensuring that it operates correctly. This technician plans maintenance activities and manages the budget for purchasing new equipment and for maintenance and repair work. He or she implements a preventive maintenance strategy to avoid production stoppages. Sometimes, a Field Service Engineer selects equipment suppliers and ensures that they are of good quality.

Before starting up the equipment, the maintenance engineer carries out diagnostics to prevent breakdowns. They monitor all the maintenance conditions of each piece of production equipment. If a machine malfunctions, he or she is required to propose solutions as quickly as possible. The Field Service Engineer draws up maintenance reports and researches data with a view to identifying the technical improvements needed.

As maintenance manager, the maintenance engineer must manage the people working on the industrial site. They are responsible for checking staff authorisations. To manage the maintenance activity successfully, the Field Service Engineer regularly monitors financial reporting and the dashboard, and reports any problems encountered to the technical director or company manager so that corrective solutions can be found quickly. If necessary, he or she takes part in troubleshooting or repairs to bring the machines back into working order.

To ensure the safety of those working on site, they check that hygiene rules and current safety standards are complied with. A Field Service Engineer may also implement certain measures to manage the environmental impact of production.

  • Scientific knowledge: to work as a field service engineer, it is essential to have knowledge of computers, electronics, electricity, electrical engineering, mechanics, etc.
  • IT skills: as a maintenance manager, the Field Service Engineer must use software such as CAD/CAM and Microsoft tools.
  • Knowledge of their sector of activity: to operate with precision, industrial maintenance managers need to be familiar with the technical constraints of their sector of activity. They must also be able to manage strategic projects for the sites where they work.
  • Excellent knowledge of regulatory provisions: the Field Service Engineer must ensure that maintenance services comply with standards.
  • Expertise in production equipment safety: this highly technical job requires in-depth knowledge of emergency protocols and machine safety.
