Main Responsibilities
A Field Service Engineer is responsible for calibrating and installing equipment and ensuring that it operates correctly. This technician plans maintenance activities and manages the budget for purchasing new equipment and for maintenance and repair work. He or she implements a preventive maintenance strategy to avoid production stoppages. Sometimes, a Field Service Engineer selects equipment suppliers and ensures that they are of good quality.
Before starting up the equipment, the maintenance engineer carries out diagnostics to prevent breakdowns. They monitor all the maintenance conditions of each piece of production equipment. If a machine malfunctions, he or she is required to propose solutions as quickly as possible. The Field Service Engineer draws up maintenance reports and researches data with a view to identifying the technical improvements needed.
As maintenance manager, the maintenance engineer must manage the people working on the industrial site. They are responsible for checking staff authorisations. To manage the maintenance activity successfully, the Field Service Engineer regularly monitors financial reporting and the dashboard, and reports any problems encountered to the technical director or company manager so that corrective solutions can be found quickly. If necessary, he or she takes part in troubleshooting or repairs to bring the machines back into working order.
To ensure the safety of those working on site, they check that hygiene rules and current safety standards are complied with. A Field Service Engineer may also implement certain measures to manage the environmental impact of production.
