Head of IT

Role overview

The Head of IT is responsible for organising, monitoring and implementing the company's IT and systems infrastructure, as well as planning and coordinating activities relating to IT systems and data processing. This position is considered to be strategic and requires graduates with experience.

The spectrum of employers for the Head of IT includes large companies in all sectors, as well as ESNs (digital service companies). The Head of IT reports to the Managing Director, the Chief Financial Officer or the Chief Information Officer.

As well as managing IT and security projects, an IT manager is also responsible for setting IT strategy, checking KPIs and keeping a constant watch on digital developments.

Main Responsibilities

The IT manager creates the IT department's budget, plans the activities of his/her team and ensures that schedules are adhered to. He or she also manages subcontracting by taking part in calls for tender, managing contracts, technical monitoring, etc.

The Head of IT defines the policy and maintenance plan for the IT infrastructure, and supervises the purchase of equipment and software. He sets up the information network infrastructure, then guarantees its operation and security. They define standards for databases, tools, systems and networks. This manager also establishes quality and security procedures for information systems.

The Head of IT is also involved in defining IT development strategy and objectives. He or she implements development projects in line with user requirements and is responsible for IT reporting.

  • Good knowledge of the outsourcing market: IT department managers need to know the basics in this field, as they will be working with software publishers and consultancies. They will also be in contact with IT services companies, customer relationship management companies, etc.
