IT Architect

Role overview

The IT Architect is a professional in charge of information system infrastructures, from design to implementation, depending on numerous characteristics and constraints.

In this job, the IT Architect takes part in the creation of specifications, taking into account the expectations of employees, the objectives and the resources available. He/she is also responsible for its implementation: timetable, choice of software, technological solutions and hardware.

It also guarantees the suitability of all IT resources (hardware, applications, databases, networks, middleware, operating systems) and their development.

Its main role is to design global IT solutions that meet business needs and are efficient, scalable, secure and cost-effective.

IT Architects are usually found in large companies. In smaller companies, this position is often given to Technical Project Managers or former Systems or Network Engineers.

Main Responsibilities

First of all, the IT Architect must understand the needs not only of the business in terms of information technology and systems, but also of customers, users, operational teams and development teams.

He also advises the IT planner on the use of IT tools. He studies the impact that a new technology may have before it is installed.

In this job, the IT Architect's role is to guarantee and ensure the coherence of the changes implemented. To do this, they define the technical infrastructures and identify the need for changes. They then choose the tools needed to implement these changes.

The IT Architect may from time to time be responsible for development and IT teams. They are accountable to their superiors for the progress of projects. They also act as a point of contact for users, informing them of updates and training them in the use of new systems.

Competencies & Skills

 

  • In-depth knowledge of IT technologies in one or more areas of IT, such as operating systems, databases, networks, virtualisation and cloud computing, IT security, etc.
  • Modelling and design skills: using methods such as UML, BPMN or ArchiMate to ensure the consistency, scalability and quality of IT solutions.
  • Knowledge of IT architecture standards and frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman and FEAF, which provide methodologies, practices and guidelines for the design and implementation of IT solutions.
  • Project management skills to manage complex IT projects planning and coordinating the various activities, monitoring budgets and deadlines, communicating with stakeholders and resolving problems.
  • Problem-solving skills: analysing problems and implementing solutions using technical expertise and knowledge of IT architecture.
  • Leadership and management skills to lead and manage a team of architects and engineers, providing technical direction, motivating the team and resolving conflicts.
