Maintenance Manager

Role Overview

The job of Maintenance Manager involves ensuring the smooth running and availability of a company's production equipment. This professional plans, manages and coordinates preventive and corrective maintenance activities. Among other things, they guarantee the safety and reliability of production equipment and processes.

The Maintenance Manager also supervises a team of technicians and engineers. He/she provides them with guidelines and advice for carrying out maintenance tasks. He or she is also in regular contact with the technical department, the production teams and the company's purchasing manager.

Main Responsibilities

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for ensuring a safe and functional working environment so that employees can operate efficiently. They ensure that production equipment is kept in good working order. To do this, he or she has a maintenance team that he or she manages and supervises. He/She ensures that each member has the necessary skills and tools to carry out their tasks. He/She is also responsible for managing the schedules of his subordinates, and occasionally takes part in the recruitment process for technicians joining his group.

In addition, the Maintenance Manager develops strategies to optimise the use of the company's equipment while minimising maintenance costs. He or she schedules preventive technical maintenance to avoid costly downtime, and carries out regular inspections to detect early signs of potential problems.

The Maintenance Manager assesses the company's manpower requirements. This involves examining existing equipment and studying the feasibility of new equipment. Depending on the results, he or she may recommend the purchase or upgrade of existing production equipment. He/She establishes relations with the company's suppliers and manages the budget allocated to maintenance.

Competencies & Skills

 

  • Computer-aided maintenance management (CMMS) software: basically, these computer programmes enable maintenance to be planned efficiently, productivity to be improved and costs to be reduced. Mastering these tools is therefore crucial in the maintenance manager's job.
  • Fluency in technical English: a lot of equipment and technology is manufactured abroad. In the Maintenance Manager's job, it is common practice to communicate with international suppliers to coordinate purchases and deliveries. It should also be noted that user manuals for production tools may be written exclusively in English.
  • Knowledge of safety standards: the maintenance of equipment and machinery can be dangerous. It is therefore important for the maintenance manager to be familiar with the safety standards in force in the industry.
  • Understanding the basic principles of mechanics, electricity, control systems and automation: these skills are essential for diagnosing and solving technical problems in machinery and equipment.
