Main Responsibilities

The Product Designer's job mainly involves creating innovative products by anticipating users' expectations and needs, and choosing the most suitable materials, colours, sizes, shapes and ergonomic features. He or she closely monitors market trends in terms of design, analyses them and then translates the results into product design ideas. After creating product prototypes, they gather feedback from target consumers.

The Product Designer then analyses the feedback from the public in order to define the areas of improvement for the final product. They must ensure that the product is technically feasible and profitable for the company.

Once the product design has been finalised, the Product Designer assists the production teams in the process of creating the final product. Their job is to assess and improve the aesthetic and technical aspects of the product to ensure that it meets customer and market requirements.

Competencies

 

  • Mastery of design software: a Product Designer must be able to create and present models of his designs to members of the development team. This job requires a perfect command of design software such as InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, etc.
  • Knowledge of UX/UI: mastery of these skills enables the product designer to create products that meet users' needs, as well as offering them a pleasant and effective user experience.
  • Mastery of computer-aided design (CAD) software: proficiency in the use of software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD or CATIA is essential for designing products. These programmes can be used to create precise 3D models for more realistic visualisation of designs. They also make it easy to modify designs to suit manufacturing requirements.
