UI Designer

Role Overview

The UI Designer (User Interface Designer) is a graphic design professional who specialises in creating and designing effective and attractive user interfaces for mobile applications, digital platforms and websites. Their role is to design intuitive, user-friendly interfaces that meet users' needs while reflecting the company's brand and visual identity.

To achieve this, the UI Designer works closely with the UX Designers (User Experience Designers), developers and marketing managers to define the needs and objectives of the project. While the UX Designer focuses on the user experience, the UI Designer works on the design, visual appearance and graphic rendering of an interface. They design each page and ensure that the visuals are consistent with the "user path" created by the UX Designer.

The UI Designer uses a variety of design tools, such as Sketch, Figma and Adobe XD, to create user interface designs that incorporate the latest trends in design and functionality. He also works with front-end development tools such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript to ensure that designs are implemented correctly on the web.

As well as creating visual designs, the UI Designer is also responsible for creating detailed technical specifications for the developers and for quality assurance of the final user interfaces. They must be able to work effectively in a team, communicate their ideas clearly and listen to the needs and comments of other team members.

Main Responsibilities

The UI Designer is a professional who designs and creates the user interface for a website or application. They are responsible for designing a technical and aesthetic nomenclature. They must define all the elements of the interface, such as font size, colours, icons, etc., and ensure that these elements are consistent with the graphic charter of the company or brand and adapted to the target audience.

They create web mock-ups and interface prototypes to validate the ergonomics, design and navigation of the site or application. They must be able to code in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to bring their mock-ups to life.

The UI Designer must make navigation on the site or application as fluid as possible by minimising the number of steps before the action required by the user. They must also ensure that navigation is intuitive and easy to understand for the user.

They are also responsible for defining the position of text, images and other graphic elements on the site or application. They must ensure that the content is hierarchical and easy to understand for the user.

The UI Designer works closely with the product and marketing teams and the UX Manager to design the user interface to meet the company's objectives and current trends in ergonomics and design. They must make it clear, and adapt it to the objectives and trends (ergonomics, design, mobile first). It must adapt to users' needs and expectations in order to create an optimal user experience.

Competencies

 

  • Knowledge of user interface design principles: a UI Designer must have an in-depth knowledge of user interface design principles, such as visual hierarchy, typography, colour, layout, etc. He or she must also have an understanding of current trends in user interface design.
  • Graphic design skills: UI Designers must be able to create visual models using design tools such as Sketch, Figma or Adobe XD. They must also be able to create graphic elements such as icons, buttons, illustrations, etc.
  • Front-end development skills: although not always necessary, front-end development skills such as knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript can be useful for a UI Designer, as they may have to work closely with developers to integrate designs.
  • Knowledge of prototyping software: a UI Designer must be able to create interactive prototypes of the user interface to test and refine designs. They must therefore have in-depth knowledge of prototyping tools such as InVision, Axure and Marvel.
  • User analysis skills: the UI Designer professional requires a good understanding of users in order to create an effective user interface. They must therefore have skills in user analysis, such as carrying out usability tests, collecting data and analysing behaviour and usage habits.
