Are you familiar with 360° feedback? Originating in the United States, this method of staff evaluation has been used in Europe since the mid-1980s. Its growing importance lies in its ability to provide a comprehensive and multidimensional evaluation of a company's employees, thus promoting their personal and professional development.

In this article, we will examine in detail what 360° assessment is, its main objective, as well as its key role in the development of employees within companies.

360° feedback: what is it?

The collection of different feedback from employees

360° feedback is a comprehensive and accurate evaluation method based on feedback from people who work with the employee being evaluated. Through the feedback from these different actors, a complete and accurate picture of the skills, behaviour and performance of an individual is obtained: an expert, a manager, a salesperson or a senior manager. Today, this method can be extended to all employees of a company. The 360° evaluation solicits multiple perceptions, such as those of hierarchical superiors, co-workers (colleagues at the same level or not), and even external stakeholders such as customers or suppliers.

The 360° evaluation process

Firstly, the employee concerned answers the questionnaire, which is based on the skills framework determined for the purpose of self-evaluation.

Then, feedback is collected from the other selected respondents. Each respondent provides valuable information on the skills and behaviour of the employee being evaluated in a professional context: supervisors, peers, subordinates and customers or external stakeholders.

Confidentiality of the evaluation

An important aspect of the 360° evaluation is the anonymous and confidential nature of the feedback. This confidentiality encourages frankness and transparency in the evaluations.

What are the objectives of the 360° method?

The advantages of the 360° evaluation

This method allows for the evaluation of an employee in an objective manner.

Here are some of the advantages of the 360° evaluation for the employee being evaluated:

  • Awareness of strengths and weaknesses: the 360° evaluation allows individuals to become aware of their managerial skills and their interpersonal abilities and skills, such as empathy, creativity, oral communication, etc. This promotes better self-knowledge and allows individuals to capitalise on their strengths while working on their weaknesses.
  • Comprehensive and objective feedback: thanks to the participation of the various respondents, the 360° evaluation provides comprehensive and objective feedback. Individuals receive comments in verbatim form, enabling them to understand how their behaviour and actions are perceived by others. This promotes accurate assessment and a better understanding of the impact of their work on the company.

The benefits of the 360° assessment for a company are as follows:

  • Identification of training and personal development needs: the 360° evaluation provides valuable information to companies by identifying areas where training and development efforts are needed. This allows for the design of customised development programmes that meet the specific needs of individuals and teams, thus strengthening skills and overall performance.
  • Improved communication and interpersonal relationships: by gathering feedback from other employees, 360° feedback promotes better communication and stronger interpersonal relationships within teams. Individuals become aware of the impact of their behaviour on others, which encourages them to improve their communication, collaboration and ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Alignment of organisational objectives: 360° feedback makes it possible to create a link between individual objectives and the organisational objectives of the company. By aligning skills and behaviours with the company's vision and values, this evaluation method promotes better overall performance of the organisation.

360° feedback is a powerful tool for assessing and developing the skills and performance of individuals in companies.
